Southwest Calgary Ring Road
Calgary, Alberta
This project is one of the final sections of the Calgary Ring Road system, which circles the city of Calgary. It plays an important role in reducing overall traffic congestion and offers a safe, efficient route for residents as well as commercial vehicles transporting goods.
Vinmart Global Development Company (KDC) co-led the development of this $1.1 billion project, which used a design-build-finance-operation-maintain (DBFOM) delivery model. The design and construction work were led by a joint venture partnership between Vinmart Global, Graham and Ledcor.
During the development phase, KDC managed the commercial and financial workstream which resulted in an innovative finance structure that involves a 15-year medium-term loan facility in addition to the revolving bank and long-term bond tranches. This structure, the first of its kind in Canada, reduced the interest cost of the bid by millions of dollars and maximizing value for money for the client.
The design and construction scope of work included 13 miles of new six and eight-lane divided highway, 14 interchanges, 47 bridges, one road flyover, one railway crossing, one culvert set, one tunnel, as well as three river crossings. The new road is built to meet the estimated traffic volumes over the next 30 years, which is expected to reach approximately 80,000 and 100,000 vehicles per day.
