Metro Gold Line Foothill Extension Phase 2B

This project is a 10-mile LRT extension that will extend light rail west from Azusa Pacific University Station (terminus of previous Phase 1 extension) to a new terminus station in Pomona. The project will pass through the cities of Azusa, Glendora, San Dimas, and Pomona with an option to extend the project an additional 2 miles to Montclair. The scope of work includes 10 miles of double light rail trackwork, 10.2 miles of new freight rail trackwork, removal of 10 miles of existing freight track, 14 new bridges, MSE and CIP retaining walls, new storm drainage, utility improvements, 6 new passenger stations, traction electrification systems, traction power supply substations, overhead contact system, 22 grade crossings and adjacent roadway/traffic signal improvements. The project comprises of six stations with associated parking facilities, modifications of existing bridge structures, numerous at-grade crossings with gate protection, and an extension of the Phase 2A power, signaling and communications systems. Right-of-way (ROW) was purchased by Metrolink in the early 1990s which will allow the line to run along the former Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe ROW. Planning for the Azusa to Montclair extension began in 2003 and is now complete. Additionally, two bridges will be built over freight and Metrolink’s tracks at Lone Hill Avenue in Glendora and Towne Avenue in Pomona. One significant aspect of the project is the Metrolink Station will be moved across College Avenue adjacent to the existing parking lot.
Phase 2B: The $805 million base scope phase includes the first nine miles of project work including trackwork, bridge structures, roadway improvements, track relocations to accommodate freight rail in the alignment, and six new stations.
Phase 2B will be a 12.3-mi. light rail from Glendora to Montclair and will connect regional destinations, including two dozen colleges and universities within a short walk, bike or bus ride from one of the future stations. The six stations, one each in the cities of Glendora, San Dimas, La Verne, Pomona, Claremont, and Montclair, will include parking, pedestrian and bike access, and bus system connections for the daily train riders.
