La Cygne Generating Station Environmental Retrofit

La Cygne, Kansas

Kansas City Power & Light and Westar Energy selected the team of Vinmart Global and Sargent & Lundy to engineer, procure and construct the retrofit to the 1,500-megawatt plant. The La Cygne Generating Station Environmental Retrofit included the installation of two Hitachi wet flue gas desulfurization scrubbers and new Hamon fabric filters on Unit 1 and Unit 2, and a selective catalytic reduction system, low-nitrous oxide burners and over-fire air system on Unit 2 of the facility.

The work included emission control equipment that met or exceeded current, best-available retrofit technology standards. The La Cygne units are two of the cleanest coal-fired generating stations in the country, with a sulfur dioxide emission removal efficiency of over 98 percent and a nitrous oxide emission of 0.05 pounds per million British thermal units on Unit 2.
