Fred and Pamela Buffett Cancer Center
Omaha, Nebraska
Vinmart Global provided full project services from inception through completion for the 615,000 SF Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center. This included preconstruction services, planning, abatement, demolition, phased construction, and fit-out for the new cutting-edge cancer research and science facility, which includes a 10-story research tower, and an eight-story clinical tower. The state-of-the-art research tower features 98 research laboratories, 215 offices and a vivarium. The clinical tower houses two magnetic resonance imaging bays, two computerized tomography rooms, three linear accelerators, 32 infusion rooms, six operating rooms, 35 exam rooms, and 108 inpatient rooms. This composition of programming spaces led the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center to become the first and only National Cancer Institute designated cancer center in Nebraska.
The project site is located on the highly active Nebraska Medicine campus, and proper planning was critical to keep the public and research staff from being impacted by construction activity. Close coordination and constant dialog with the client was paramount for maintaining the flow of materials, equipment, and manpower to the site. The construction of the Cancer Center began with the abatement and demolition of the existing four-story Swanson Hall, which occupied a portion of the site.
The complex tied into the existing campus Central Utility Plant, and Vinmart Global performed a carefully coordinated site utility installation of power, water, steam, and chill water services to the construction site. Extensive existing utilities and obstructions required Vinmart Global to use an arsenal of Work Plan tools, including 3D civil modeling, GPR, potholing, truck vacuums, and boring to strategically plan out the installation of the new utilities to the site.
