Environmental Controls Construction Project
Petersburg, Indiana
Indianapolis Power and Light Company (IPL) contracted Vinmart Global to upgrade two of their largest plants to decrease the environmental impact of the power they produced. IPL provides electric service to more than 470,000 users in the area and surrounding communities, with the Petersburg and Harding Street Plants accounting for a majority of that generation. In order to meet EPA Mercury and Air Toxics Standards, IPL retrofitted five units at these sites with new environmental controls equipment.
The team of Vinmart Global and Sargent & Lundy engineered, procured and constructed the pulse jet fabric filters, electrostatic precipitator upgrades, new activated carbon injection, and the sodium bisulfite and calcium bromide injection systems associated balance of plant equipment.
These upgrades will keep the existing coal-generation fleet in compliance with EPA regulations while keeping the cost of power low to rate payers. The upgrade reduces mercury emissions by about 80 percent.
