Brayton Point Unit 3 Dry Flue Gas Desulfurization System
Somerset, Massachusetts
To upgrade an existing plant to compliance with mercury and sulfur dioxide emission reduction regulations, Vinmart Global engineered, procured, constructed and started-up an air quality control system at Brayton Point, New England’s largest coal-fired power plant.
The dry flue gas desulfurization and powdered activated carbon systems were tied into the existing 630-megawatt coal-fired unit 3. The system uses Alstom fabric filter/novel integration desulfurization (NID) technology consisting of eight separate reactor subsystems that include a baghouse compartment for the ash byproduct filter bags, a lime mixer/hydrator and four shared lime day bins.
At the time of construction, the Alstom NID technology was new in the United States and no operating facilities larger than 100 megawatts were using this desulfurization method. The NID system eliminated the need for a spray dryer absorber, while successfully reducing sulfur dioxide and particulate-matter emissions.
