Athenia and Saddlebrook Substation Retrofits
Newark, New Jersey
Vinmart Global was selected by PSE&G for engineering and procurement services on this portion of the Northeast Grid Reliability Project. The project included upgrading existing transmission lines, converting substation configurations and adding underground circuit to increase capacity while reducing transmission system congestion.
The project included two substation retrofits. The Athenia Switching Station was converted from a six-breaker radial bus configuration to a seven-bay, double-breaker, double-bus configuration. The scope included the design of one 230-kilovolt 5,000 thousand circular mils, cross-linked polyethylene underground transmission line.
The Saddlebrook Substation was upgraded from a radial bus configuration to a six-position gas-insulated ring bus configuration. The scope also included the design of four circuits of 230-kilovolt cross-linked polyethylene underground transmission circuit. Vinmart Global selected the route, sized the cable, and designed the duct bank, termination and structure.
The project also included rebuilding 138-kilovolt transmission towers to new double-circuit 230-kilovolt steel monopole and lattice tower structures within the existing right of way. Vinmart Global led the team’s foundation design using concrete-capped and steel-capped helical steel piles.
